Tories select candidate for Southall

Gurcharan Singh is selected as the Conservative candidate for the Ealing Southall seat.

Councillor Singh was one of five councillors who defected from Labour to the Tories during the July 2007 by-election.

He represents the Lady Margaret ward and has been a councillor since 1982.

The former Mayor of Ealing is currently an advisor on "race relations" to the Conservative party leader David Cameron.

Some people will be surprised by councillor Gurcharan Singh's selection as he was a Labour councillor, only last year.

The general election is expected to take place next year.
